Bernard’s brace wins the Varsity Cup for Tuks

Image
Bernard van der Linde scored the winning try in the 78th minute as Tuks produced a dramatic comeback to snatch the Varsity Cup final against Maties in Stellenbosch on Monday night. It was Tuks’ fifth title overall, putting the Pretoria university level with Maties, as they become the first-ever team in Varsity Cup history to finish fourth on the league table and go on to win the Varsity Cup title. The 29-23 victory was Tuks’ first win at the Danie Craven Stadium since the 2013 Varsity Cup final. It was an incredibly heroic second-half effort from the visitors, who for so long in the match were deprived of any meaningful territory and possession as they were bossed in the collisions and scrums. Maties will rue not making more of their opportunities, particularly at the start of the second half, when they were camped on Tuks’ tryline. The home side looked set to be cruising to a comfortable victory as flyhalf Nevaldo Fleurs had a perfect night off the kicking tee, slotting all six

Leinster boss warns SA of ‘war on two fronts’

Leo Cullen says South African teams have the luxury of “recharging their batteries” while the Europeans battle in two competitions simultaneously. Cullen was speaking after a second-string Leinster lost 28-23 to the Sharks at Kings Park on Saturday night –  eight days after knocking Irish rivals Connacht out of the Champions Cup. Leinster have taken flak for sending a ‘B’ side to SA, and Cullen’s men will next face the Stormers on Saturday, the Capetonians now second in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship behind the Irish after Friday’s win over Glasgow Warriors.  SA teams will in 2022-23 for the first time compete in the Champions and Challenge Cups, which runs concurrently with the URC. Watch: Why Sharks must punish second-rate Leinster Following Saturday’s defeat in Durban, Cullen told Leinster Rugby TV : “There’s plenty going in the head-to-head [clashes], and I’m glad we’re a little further up the table in terms of that buffer we have. “You can just see how closely the

Five Caolan Dooley penalties and a 76th-minute try from full-back Adam La Grue proved enough for Terenure College, who edged out Lansdowne 20-18 in a cagey semi-final at Lakelands Park. Lansdowne had a chance to take the game into extra-time, but Ireland Under-20 out-half Charlie Tector missed the conversion from the left after Sean Galvin’s try had given the visitors late hope. The game doubled up as the Leinster Senior Cu

Sharks make heavy weather of second-rate Leinster

The Sharks were made to toil in the Durban rain to claim a vital bonus-point victory over a second-string Leinster side at Kings Park on Saturday night. Phepsi Buthelezi scored the decisive try for the Sharks in the second half to give the home side a hard-fought 28-23 victory after they trailed 14-17 at the break. The result moved the Sharks above Glasgow Warriors into fifth place on the Vodacom United Rugby Championship log, keeping up their hopes of both making it into the playoffs and qualifying for the European Champions Cup. The Sharks also trail the Stormers by one point in the race to top the South African Shield, which would guarantee qualification into Europe. However, it was far from straightforward against log-leaders Leinster, who fielded a couple of debutants as they were without the likes of Ireland internationals Johnny Sexton and James Lowe. Roos rampant as Rassie sees the light

Another telling contribution from Evan Roos in an important Stormers victory appears to finally have caught the eye of Rassie Erasmus. The rampaging Stormers No 8 powered over for a try in the final minute of a 32-7 bonus-point victory against Glasgow Warriors in Cape Town on Friday night. It capped off an eye-catching performance from 22-year-old Roos as John Dobson’s men stormed into second place in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. Supersub Gelant stars in Stormers’ bonus-point win

Image
Warrick Gelant made a telling second-half impact to steer the Stormers to a vital bonus-point victory over the Glasgow Warriors in Cape Town on Friday night. In his first match in nearly a month, having last played against Ulster on 26 March, Gelant came off the bench and delivered a sensational second-half performance as the Stormers claimed a 32-7 win to fortify their claim on a place in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship playoffs. The result puts the Stormers 14 points clear of ninth-placed Scarlets, who have three games left to play, including a home game against the Cape side in the final round of the tournament. The Springbok coaching staff would certainly have taken note of the Stormers’ fullbacks as it was Damian Willemse who ran the show in the first half, grabbing a try-assist and slotting a beautifully weighted 50/22 kick. While plenty was made of Oli Kebble’s return to Cape Town, the Scotland-capped prop was given a rude welcome in the scrum by Frans Malherbe, who t
